Explore the rapidly growing field of psychiatry within the NHS and why it's one of the most in-demand specialties for international doctors.
Psychiatry is currently one of the NHS's most under-staffed specialties, which makes it one of the most welcoming entry points for overseas doctors. Trusts across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are actively recruiting at SAS, specialty doctor, and consultant level.
Why the demand is so high
Mental health referrals have grown faster than any other NHS service line over the last five years. Combined with retirement bulges in the consultant workforce, this has created a structural shortage that is unlikely to close before 2030.
Subspecialties most in demand
- General adult psychiatry — both inpatient and community.
- Old age psychiatry, especially in coastal and retirement-heavy regions.
- Child and adolescent (CAMHS) — long waiting lists across the country.
- Forensic psychiatry — secure units and prison services.
- Liaison psychiatry in acute hospitals.
Routes in for IMGs
MRCPsych (full membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists) is the cleanest path to specialist registration via the CESR route. Many trusts will sponsor you to sit MRCPsych Paper B and CASC after you've started in a non-training post.
Specialty doctor and SAS roles offer competitive pay (often £55K–£90K base, plus on-call) and a stable runway towards consultant level over 4–6 years.
